In this IEE eForum and dialogue, Peter Fox-Penner shared his thoughts on the biggest challenges facing today’s electric utilities and his vision of the electric utility of the future.
On Thursday, July 15, 2010, Dr. Fox-Penner discussed his new book, Smart Power: Climate Change, Smart Grid, and the Future of Electric Utilities, and made the case that, looking forward, the electric utility industry is beset by change. Utilities must respond to global climate change with unprecedented urgency by investing in new sources of power and transmission and also implementing much stronger energy efficiency policies than in the past, reducing the rate of power sales growth to nearly zero. In addition, new “smart grid” technologies will force a retooling of the century-old business model and “regulatory compact” that supports the current industry.
